TOTS Sessions

Information about the TOTS Series

We're pleased to announce the start of a new summer series of monthly workshops on nifty new Web 2.0/social software tools and widgets that that we may be considering (or are already using) as outreach and teaching tools. As summer is the time we plan for the next year, these sessions will get us thinking about new ways to connect with our faculty and students.

Series Co-ordinators:

Susan Atkey, Katherine Miller and Lindsay Ure

Series Sponsors:

Reference and Instruction and eLibrary committees

Aim:

The series acronym TOTS (Tools for Outreach and Teaching Series) reflects the playful, exploratory approach we wish to bring to these sessions. Each session will include a short overview of the technology and speakers will briefly highlight some of their applications of these tools. There will also be an opportunity for hands on practice with these tools in a "sandbox" environment, followed by a discussion of their value for teaching and outreach.

Topics:

- Wikis

- Social networking tools (FaceBook/Twitter/MySpace/Carmun)

- Instant Messaging and MeeboMe

- Blogs for Subject and Branch liaison

- RSS feeds

- Customized search engines (Google Co-op)

- Mashups and Yahoo Pipes

- Podcasting

- Microbloging

- Mobile Devices

Participation/Speakers:

Are you already using one or more of these tools? We're looking for champions to speak in upcoming sessions to demo and speak about their own experiences with these tools. If you'd like to participate as a speaker, please contact Susan Atkey, Katherine Miller or Lindsay Ure.

Thanks,

Susan Atkey, Katherine Miller and Lindsay Ure
