Session Information

 

The 8th session in the TOTS series, “The TOTS session on Real-Time Communication and Teaching Tools will be held on Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 from 10am-12:00 noon in the Dodson Room in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. UBC library staff will have the opportunity to share and explore tools for real time communication, for one-on-one chat, teaching to a group of students, or holding online meetings with colleagues.

Open-source, web conferencing software. Free for up to 20 participants.

 

Zoho Meeting

Online meeting / web conferencing tool

 

Google Talk

Chat with other gmail users and while collaborating on shared documents within Google Docs. Note: at the time of our presentation, the chat feature worked only with spreadsheets and presentations.

MeeboMe Widget  

Embed a chat widget in any web page.

 

MeeboRooms  

Create online chat rooms and embed them on a web page. You can share videos, photos, and links with others in the room.

 

Skype   

Chat online for free with other Skype users, one on one, or with a group. Requires a download (for Mac, PC, or Linux). To take advantage of audio and video features, you will need a microphone, speakers and webcam. Skype Extras allow for integration with other tools, such as Yugma (screen sharing tool).

 

Skype allows for free conference calls for up to 9 people. Video calls are only possible with two people.
